🐕 Advanced command

The “Fetch”

From play to teamwork: turning the chase instinct into sharing.

🎯Stage 1: Building the desire to take and release▼
Take and release (hand to hand)
Place the toy in your dog's mouth. As soon as he holds it for 1-2 seconds, say “Fetch!” and give a jackpot. Repeat 10-15 times.
Releasing on cue
Dog sitting. Put the ball in his mouth, wait 1 second, give the cue “Fetch!” and reward as soon as he lets go.
The mini-retrieve (50 cm)
Put the ball 50 cm away. As soon as he picks it up, clap your hands. Reward as soon as he comes back to you.
The two-ball method
Throw the first ball. When he has it, wave the second. He will drop the first for the second. Say “Fetch!” as soon as he lets go.
🔄Stage 2: Learning to bring the object back▼
Guided return (long line)
Use a 2-3 m long line. Throw 1 m. As soon as he picks it up, step back two paces, calling him cheerfully. Say “Fetch!” and reward when he reaches you.
The voluntary swap
Offer an irresistible treat under his nose when he comes back. Say “Fetch!”, give the treat as soon as he lets go and throw again straight away.
The automatic drop
Throw 2-3 m. Only take the toy if he sits or drops it at your feet. Calm behaviour is what restarts the game.
🏆Stage 3: Distance, reliability and variations▼
Controlled start (Sit-Stay)
Put your dog in position. Throw 5 m. Give the cue to go only when you decide.
Handling distractions
Throw into long grass or near another toy. Give a 10x reward if he ignores the distraction and brings the object back to you.
Generalising
Vary the objects (ball, stick, soft toy, glove) in different places (water, town, park).
💡Handling mistakes and key points▼
⚠️
If he runs off with the object: A firm “Hey!”. If he doesn't come back, sit down and ignore him. The game stops dead. Never chase him!
  • Hand from above: Your hand always comes from above, to steady the dog's head.
  • Flip the focus: Don't stare at the dog as he returns. Look elsewhere so that he feels the need to come to you.
  • End of the session: Always finish on a complete success.
