Important: The surface must be very comfortable and soft to protect your dog's spine as he rolls. Avoid hard floors.
💡
Starting position: Your dog should be in the “Down” position, settled and steady.
🎯The luring phase (step by step)▼
The set-up
Place the treat in front of your dog's nose while he is lying down.
Tipping over
Move your hand slowly towards his shoulder, then over his neck towards the other shoulder.
The roll
To keep the treat in sight, your dog will have to tip onto his side, then onto his back. Keep your hand moving in a circle to encourage him to finish the roll.
The reward
As soon as your dog has completed the full roll and is lying down again, say “Roll over!” and give the treat immediately.
✅
Key to success: Your hand movement must be smooth and continuous. Don't stop halfway; follow the roll all the way round.
🗣️Introducing the verbal cue▼
Once your dog rolls over smoothly while following your hand:
Linking the word
Say “Roll over!” (or “Roll”) at the exact moment you start the circular hand movement.
Repeat
Repeat several times to fix the link between the word and the action. Say “Roll over!” and reward every success.
🎓Fading the lure▼
The aim is for your dog to roll over from a simple gesture at a distance:
Empty hand, held higher
Make the circling gesture with your empty hand, a little higher above your dog.
Delayed reward
If he does it, give him a treat from your pocket or your other hand.
Make the gesture smaller
Gradually make your gesture smaller until a small circle with one finger is enough to trigger the cue.
💡Final tips▼
Direction of the roll: Dogs often have a favourite side. Always work in the same direction at first.
Don't force it: If your dog gets stuck on his back, don't push him physically. First reward the move onto his side, then ask for a little more in each session.
Mind the build: Dogs with a very broad chest or a very long back may find it harder to roll. Be patient and encouraging.
Check the surroundings: Make sure there is nothing nearby that could get in your dog's way or knock him as he rolls.
