In short: I'm Jordan Mathieu, a dog trainer and behaviourist based in Antibes (06600). I work in English or French, at your home and outdoors, with puppies and adult dogs. A session lasts about 1 hour and costs €80; the behaviour assessment (about 2 hours) is €130, free with any package.
My approach is positive and force-free, built on trust, consistency and clear boundaries.
Dog training in English, where you live
Moving to the Côte d'Azur with a dog, or adopting one once you're here, brings its own questions. The rules on leads, beaches and parks are different from home, the vet and the neighbours speak French, and your dog has to get used to new noises, new streets and a lot of other dogs. Training should not add a language barrier on top of that.
All sessions, explanations and follow-up can be done in English. If your family is bilingual, we can mix both languages, and I can help you understand local signs and rules.
Where I work
I'm based in Antibes and visit families in Antibes and Juan-les-Pins, Valbonne and Sophia Antipolis, Biot, as well as Villeneuve-Loubet, Cagnes-sur-Mer, Mougins, Cannes, Le Cannet, Nice, Grasse, Mouans-Sartoux, Opio, Roquefort-les-Pins, La Colle-sur-Loup, Vence and nearby towns. If you're not sure your town is covered, send me a WhatsApp message (the full list is on the area covered page, in French).
How it works
- First contact. Tell me about your dog on WhatsApp or by phone, and we pick a date.
- Behaviour assessment (~2 h, at your home). I observe your dog in their everyday environment, we talk through their history and your goals, and you leave with practical advice you can apply straight away.
- Sessions (~1 h). At home and outdoors, always with you. Most of the work is with the owner: the aim is that you understand your dog and know how to respond calmly, even when I'm not there.
- Follow-up. With a package you get access to the client area (PDF sheets, videos, progress tracking), group walks and workshops. You can also use the free training sheets.
What we can work on
- Puppy trainingHouse-training, biting, being alone, socialisation, from around 8 weeks.
- Loose-lead walkingA dog that pulls, zigzags or stops everywhere.
- RecallA dog that comes back, even with distractions.
- Resource guardingFood bowl, toys, bed or a person being guarded.
- Reactivity and fearBarking or lunging at dogs or people, fear of noises or the city.
- House-trainingFor puppies and adult dogs alike.
More complex issues, such as anxiety, reactivity or tension with children or another pet, are worked on step by step, always at the dog's pace.
Local tips for dog owners on the Riviera
- Leads: dogs must be on a lead on public roads, and in departmental nature parks such as Vaugrenier, the Brague and the Valmasque all year round.
- Beaches: many beaches, including those in Antibes, are closed to dogs in summer, even on a lead. See the dog-friendly beaches guide.
- Fire risk: from mid-June to the end of September, access to forest areas is restricted day by day.
- Hunting season: in the Alpes-Maritimes, it runs from September to January; keep your dog visible and on a lead.
- Category 1 and 2 dogs: lead, muzzle and a permit from the town hall are required.
The free dog owners' map lists walks, parks and alerts (processionary caterpillars, cyanobacteria, livestock guardian dogs). See also the parks guide and 11 dog-friendly hikes in the 06.
